seeds

edible gardening is more than fun—it is delicious.  i am truly enjoying my lettuces, green onions, and rhubarb this year from my garden. i like to plant my lettuces and green onions in stages—so that i have a supply throughout the summer, with seeds growing to maturity at various intervals.

some of my green onion seeds were planted too late last year, but made it just fine though the winter and were some of my first onions that we enjoyed this late spring and summer.   tender lettuce usually takes about 35 to 50 days to maturity.

the hudson valley seed library has beautifully designed and artistic seeds packets.  i bought them first for their presentation, not knowing much about the company.  but, with a quick trip to the internet–i found out that this company is based in New York and has been in operation for nine years.  they offer a full seed library of heirloom and open-pollinated seeds.

they refuse to sell genetically engineered seeds.  they have more than 200 seeds varieties and commission contemporary artists to design the seeds packets.  i just love the packets !

i am planting these lettuces later in the month when the temperature drops, as lettuce loves cooler temperatures.  i still have two pots of lettuce, arugula, mustards, and other tender greens growing to feed us from now until then.
